Why sunscreen matters in India

Strong sunlight through most of the year means daily UV exposure. UVB causes tanning and burning, while UVA reaches deeper, driving pigmentation and ageing. Darker skin is less likely to burn but more likely to develop pigmentation.

Reading the label

  • SPF measures protection from UVB — choose SPF 30 or higher.
  • PA+ to PA++++ rates UVA protection — more plus signs mean more protection.
  • Broad-spectrum means it covers both UVA and UVB.
  • Gel or matte formulas suit oily and acne-prone skin.

How to apply it

Most people use too little. Squeeze two finger-lengths of sunscreen for the face and neck, apply 15–20 minutes before going out, and reapply every 2–3 hours when outdoors or after sweating.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need sunscreen indoors?

If you sit near windows or spend time in bright daylight indoors, yes — UVA passes through glass. It is simplest to apply sunscreen every morning.
